Andrea Winkler creates room installations often of an intervening character. Her approach is distinguished by minimal alterations and a subtly estranged »restaging« of everyday fragments that partly draws from a pool of objects used for decoration and orchestration. Winkler incorporates the specific spatial situation in her installations so that the space itself becomes in its function and form a crucial part in the whole 'picture'.
Stefan Panhans is next to his video work also known for his photographic work. In the last two years he mainly focused on phenomena of contemporary life and urbanity - mostly with elaborately staged rooms and places that Panhans finds in the everyday sight of highly commercialised cities. Once with obstructed gaze, once outright, his photographs question these staged performances together with their instrumentalized promises and suggestions.
Both of the artistic approaches have a distinctive irritating undertone that queries particular allocations of meanings and functions of everyday objects, rooms and sceneries. To reinterpret them through simple modifications, as room installation or as photographic images, is both artists’ common strategy. Andrea Winkler and Stefan Panhans worked for the first time together and created an installation specifically for the RAUM FÜR ZWECKFREIHEIT.
