In his work Offenes Buch (Open ReSource), Ingo Gerken focuses on historic and contemporary works of photography. Specifically, these are photographed arrangements created in the reading rooms of universities and art libraries over the space of several years. At the interface between artistic everyday life and art-historical research, Gerken has scoured the pages of contemporary art (market-)scene as a formal contextual terrain, interpreting classic monographs and glossy catalogues as mentally open terrains for poetic expansion or critical commentary. Ultimately, this concerns a series of small interventions that emerge for a brief moment directly alongside (and together with) their literary source; between homage and subversion, composed and documented ‘on site’.
On the basis of this work Ingo Gerken realized a new installation for the space of the RAUM FÜR ZWECKFREIHEIT.
Gerken’s art continually reflects and questions its own situation and own conditions of production. Moreover, his work thrives from the use of ambivalent quotes of art-internal references, samples or remakes, but above all from an unobtrusive quality of precise improvisation.
